Have to? Absolutely not. I had several Thai GFs, and have never given an allowance, not even to the working class Issan girls, let alone middle class ones.
Admittedly, I provided occasional financial benefits to those who need the money (a new laptop, ticket home, things like that), and could occasionally be seen as a financial backstop... but a regular monthly commitment, hell no.
To be fair, all this was happening with Thai girls around my age (within 10 years), and at the time Farang guys were immensely popular (with few under-40s around), which is not so much the case today.
As I get older and the Thai girls get pickier, I can actually see myself paying an allowance to a regular partner who's hot and 20+ years younger. Why else would she keep seeing an old geezer like me? If this were the arrangement, I wouldn't call her a "legit Thai girlfriend", but let's not get too hung up on names.
